We’re looking at major cities across the United States and asking the top Realtors in those markets to examine the first time buyer market in their area. We recently talked to Realtor Stephen FitzMaurice and here’s what he had to say about the beautiful mecca of Portland, Oregon.

First time home buyers biggest fear is buying in the wrong neighborhood. My first time buyer have sat in their cars all night, listening and watching to the neighborhood before they buy their next home. I’ve even had them knock on the the neighbors doors to try to meet as many as possible before making an offer. It can be stressful not to know the neighborhood or even know where the Portland post office is located before you move in. We have a lot of experience in every neighborhood in Portland and do our best to guide our nervous clients.

Q2. When you bought your own first home, what did you learn about the process?

I bought my first home the first year I was licensed (many moons ago). It was an old fixer and I lived to regret it! In retrospect, I should have used a more experienced agent to help me find a home (like myself now more than a decade later).

Q3.  Is now a good time to be a first time buyer in Portland? Why or why not?

It is an excellent time to be a first time buyer in Portland. We are a top ten real estate market and most analysts predict strong appreciation in the upcoming years. You definitely need top-notch buyer’s agent representation as it is a seller’s market and not easy to buy. While it is not easy, it is still worth it. In nearly every Portland neighborhood it is much more expensive to rent than to buy.

Q4. Is there anything special or unique about Portland or Oregon that first timers should know about?

Portland-oregonKeep Portland weird.

That’s our city’s unofficial slogan. There is a strong culture here, great art, and perhaps the top food scene in the country. Not every neighborhood is “weird” but many are which is why so many solo travelers find themselves drawn here. We know the difference and are happy to guide our clients to where they want to go.
